Ella Vita, Hogsback, and Slime Gulch Loop Description

Although there will likely be a fair amount of mountain bikers along the trail, the Ella Vita, Hogsback, and Slime Gulch Loop is a great route that will allow you to get in a good amount of exercise while taking in some beautiful views of Durango and the surrounding area.

Setting out from the trailhead, you will follow along the Ella Vita trail as it heads to the northwest alongside a creek, before turning more to the north and climbing further uphill. Here, you will keep left at a fork and follow the trail to the west as it climbs up the lightly forested slopes to the top of a ridge for some amazing views of the surrounding San Juan Mountains.

Eventually, the trail will turn to the northeast and head downhill, where you will enter Slime Gulch and meet up with the banks of a creak. After following the creek to the southeast, you will then climb back uphill through the trees to the south, meeting up with your original path and following it back into the trailhead where you began your adventure.
