The Animas Overlook Trail is a short and sweet hiking route in the San Juan Mountains that will produce some gorgeous views overlooking the surrounding landscape. While out on the trail, you will meander along a lightly forested path that offers an amazing sightline across the Animas River, Animas Mountain, and the town of Durango. Parking at the trailhead can fill up rather quickly, so you might want to arrive early or at off peak times to easily secure a parking space.

If you aren’t interested in the journey and want to simply experience the destination, the Animas Overlook Trail will be a great route for you to check out. This extremely quick and easy adventure in the San Juan Mountains follows along a short loop for some gorgeous views, making it a great bang for your buck excursion.
Setting out from the parking area, you will follow along the path as it winds through the forest and offers scenic views of the Animas River Valley through the tree cover. Here, you will have a great sightline looking down upon the town of Durango, Animas Mountain, Animas River, and the surrounding San Juan Mountains.
As quickly as you experienced the beautiful views of the Colorado landscape, your time on the trail will be over and you will arrive back at the parking area where you began your adventure.
