The Black Mountain Lookout Hike is a quick and easy adventure in the San Bernardino National Forest that will take you up to a summit viewpoint for a gorgeous sightline across the surrounding terrain, While out on the trail, you will work your way uphill along a forest road, gaining a small amount of elevation before arriving at a lookout tower that, when open, provides sweeping views of the Southern California landscape. Hikers should take note that the road leading into the trailhead isd quite rough and rugged and will require a high clearance vehicle to safely traverse.

Black Mountain Lookout Hike Description

Whether you are already hiking in the area or are spending a few nights camping in the Boulder Basin Campground, the Black Mountain Lookout Hike is a fantastic trail with scenic views that can easily be tacked on to your existing adventure plans.

Setting out from the campground, you will follow the forest service road as it heads south and cuts through the dense forest terrain. Here, you will work your way further uphill and follow the road as it bends to the northwest on the way to the top of the peak.

After arriving at the summit of Black Mountain, you will find a lookout tower that might be closed. If it is open, you can climb up and experience the wonderful views of the rugged mountains and sprawling forests surrounding you, before heading back downhill to the campground where you began your adventure.
