The Pool Hike

The Pool Hike is a wonderful subalpine adventure to a hypnotic pool. The sight of the blue-hued swirling waters is inviting, but don’t let it fool you, the turbulence of The Pool is very dangerous. This short but sweet path to The Pool is ideal for families and spontaneous hikes in the Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP)—just make sure you have your park pass! The Fern Lake Trail goes beyond The Pool, and The Pool Hike itself is popular, so if you wish to secure a spot in the parking lot and avoid heavy traffic, we suggest arriving nice and early!

Begin your adventure to The Pool of the Rocky Mountain National Park, by way of the Fern Lake Trailhead. From here, follow the Fern Lake Trail east, along the curves of the Big Thompson River, where you may spot anglers and spectators atop the riverbanks. Hike the mildly undulating path through granite outcroppings and beneath the sparse tree coverage, enjoying sights of the looming summits peeking through the tree breaks. Eventually you will have to ascend a steep ridge to The Pool.

Once at The Pool, enjoy the ambiance of the rushing waters and the mesmerising sights of the cascades. Revel in the grandeur of the towering cliffs and the serene vistas of the subalpine wilderness. Explore The Pool, and when you are ready, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
