Emerald Mountain Trail

The Emerald Mountain Trail is a scenic excursion the whole family can venture. Located along the eastern boundary of the Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), the Emerald Mountain Trail sees little traffic, so if you are in search of a quiet nature walk, then you may have found your match. Though short, it is worth noting this gravel path is steep! This trail demands some stamina, and if you have knee or joint issues, the steep incline may be too demanding. Located within the RMNP, hikers are required to purchase a park pass to utilize the trails.

From the trailhead off the Tunnel Road, track the Emerald Mountain Trail west. Hike along Wind River and ignore the off-shooting and merging paths, simply continue hiking the Emerald Mountain Trail. Shortly after you depart from the trailhead, the path will curve north. Ascend the sparsely covered route and enjoy the views as you climb. Trek up the short, but incredibly steep path to the summit of Emerald Mountain.

From atop Emerald Mountain, you will be rewarded with vistas of the Bear Lake Area. Notice Hallett Peak in the southwest as well as the other snow-capped summits that sit atop the Continental Divide. In the northeast you will be offered sights of Estes Park. Catch your breath and enjoy the mountainous scenery from the summit before beginning your descent. When you are ready, head down the trail the way you came, minding your footing on the loose gravel, all the way back to the trailhead.
