Sky Trail and Bear Valley Loop Description

Beckoning those seeking a tranquil and serene experience, the Sky Trail and Bear Valley Loop offer an otherworldly experience. The lush rainforest dripping with dew boasts an incomparable primordial ambiance. Wandering through the woodlands and along the coast, the weather conditions are subject to change, so we encourage you to dress in layers. It is extremely important to maintain on the marked path when travelling along the Coast Trail as the bluffs here are notoriously unstable and can easily give away! Additionally, be mindful of poison oak as you meander beneath the tree canopy and through the tall brush—we urge you to wear long pants to avoid exposure.

Indulge yourself in the beautiful coastal environment of California. Exhibiting the diversity of the area’s flora and fauna, the Sky Trail and Bear Valley Loop make for an incredible hiking day. As you adventure through the enchanting forestlands, you will be granted sights of the lush fir and bay trees, vibrant wildflowers, berries, and mushrooms. This whimsical trail is best explored in the mornings for a tranquil experience. Don’t forget to charge your camera; you will be rewarded with stunning ocean panoramas from the summit of Mount Wittenburg and from the Coast Trail. Get a workout in as you discover the natural beauty of the Point Reyes National Seashore along this epic excursion.

Your journey along the Sky Trail and Bear Valley Loop begins from the Bear Valley Trailhead at the Visitors Center. Setting out from here, follow the Bear Trail south to an intersection. Though this loop can be completed from either direction, we chose to trek counterclockwise, diverting right onto the Mount Wittenburg Trail. Follow this path west into the forestlands, ascending a gradual incline to the summit of the mountain. From here, you will be granted partial views of the encompassing landscape. Retrace your footing back down the mountain, past the Sky Campground, and onto the Sky Trail.

Appreciate the scenery and the ambiance of the coastal rainforest as you meander southeast.

As you near the coast, the density of the tree stands will thin, and the conditions will get windier. Eventually, you will reach the route’s end at an intersection with the Coast Trail. At this moment, you will keep left, tracking southeast along the delicate headlands. Admire the sweeping ocean vistas as you wander along the cliffs. Diverting you away from the coast again, you will merge onto the Bear Valley Trail at the next junction. This section of the hike is flat and sometimes muddy as it runs parallel to Coast Creek through the woodlands to Divide Meadow. From here, the path will follow Bear Valley Creek all the way back to the trailhead, marking the end of your adventure.
