Mount Wittenburg Trail Description

Hiking this route will get your heart rate up without over-exhausting you! Explore luxuriant meadowlands often decorated with elk and deer, and travel through lush temperate forests to the highest peak in the Point Reyes National Seashore. Though this route is manageable by most, it demands some endurance as it travels to high elevations, so it is not suitable for younger children! Due to the trail’s proximity to the ocean, expect windy and foggy conditions. Dress in layers and insurance against chilly conditions!

Setting out from the trailhead, the Mount Wittenburg Hike follows the Bear Valley Trail south through the meadowlands. Not long after leaving the trailhead, you will turn right onto the Mount Wittenburg Trail. This path will guide you west up a gradual incline and into the woodlands. Admire the lush vegetation that lines the path and be sure to keep an eye out for camouflaging deer and elk in the tall brush!

Eventually, you will reach the summit of Mount Wittenburg. On a clear day, you will be granted interrupted views of the ocean through the tree breaks. Enjoy the chilly breeze and the coastal scenery before beginning your return. To get back to the trailhead, simply backtrack along the trail.
