Drakes Head Trail Description

Escape the stressors of the real world and indulge in the stunning coastal views of the Pacific along the Drakes Head Trail. We love this scenic trek along the estuaries, through cattle ranches, and over rolling hills to an overlook of the ocean. While this route features wonderful views, the unshaded terrain also exposes hikers to extreme conditions, so make sure you check the forecast and dress accordingly! Additionally, this route is subject to wildlife closure to safeguard the elephant seal population; refer to the NPS website for further information.

Embark on your journey along the Drakes Head Trail from the Estero Trailhead. From here, follow the Estero Trail in a southward direction. This path will guide you down to the estuary, crossing a footbridge over Home Bay. From here, the path will climb along Drakes Estero and into the meadows. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the cattle as you explore the coastal grasslands. Continue along this route until you reach an intersection with the Drakes Head Trail. Here, you will veer right and be diverted southward to Drakes Head.

From the overlook, you will be granted expansive views of the picturesque ocean that is abundant with marine life. Keep an eye out for elephant seals sunning on the shores or playing in the waters. When you are through reveling in the coastal scenery, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
