Additionally, the shoreline cliffs here are inherently unstable, so maintain on the marked path and keep a safe distance from the edge.

Setting out from the Bear Valley Trailhead at the visitor’s center, the Bear Valley and Coast Hike follows the Bear Valley Trail south. This path borders a meadow before confronting a junction with the Mount Wittenberg Trail; keep left here. Now you will be guided beneath the tree canopy of firs and California bay. Gradually climbing, you will be lulled into a state of relaxation by the sounds of the gurgling waters of Bear Valley Creek. Though tempting, be sure to stay on the marked path as there is poison oak and nettles here. You will eventually reach the highest point of the hike in Divide Meadows. Here you will find washrooms as well as grazing elk in the high brush. Admire the wildflowers, berries, and the sweet smell of the honeysuckle before continuing your hike.

From this point, the path will lead you down into the forested canyon of Coast Creek—bikes are prohibited from this point forward. Heading back beneath the tree shade, you will be led southwest to the coastal grasslands. Eventually, you will reach an intersection; keep right along the Coast Trail to the tapering headlands. Be mindful of your footing and keep a safe distance from the cliff’s edge. Indulge in the panoramas of the surging surf and the sandy beaches that stretch along the coast. On a clear day, you may even be able to see the Farallon Islands in the southwest. Marvel in the beauty of the maritime vistas, and when you are ready, head back along the path the way you came back to the trailhead.
