The Lord’s Seat & Mam Tor Walk is a fun route in the Peak District that requires a bit of uphill walking in order to reach several scenic viewpoints. Along the trail, you will cross the valley floor and climb up to an amazing plateau lookout before traversing Mam Tor and The Great Ridge. Bring plenty of snacks and don’t forget your camera for this amazingly scenic route in Derbyshire.

Please note this area is seeing a significant increase in litter, illegal fires, off-lead dogs, irresponsible parking, and overcrowding. Due to this, we encourage you to consider visiting another area in the Peak District at this time or ensure you are respecting the rules outlined by Peak District National Trust during your visit.

Lord’s Seat & Mam Tor Walk Description

Even with the steep sections of trail that climb up The Great Ridge, the Lord’s Seat & Mam Tor Walk is a popular outdoor activity in the Peak District due to the scenic views overlooking the charming valley and the chance to visit the iconic Mam Tor. Setting out from the trailhead at the Fieldhead Campsite, the trail initially heads north before turning sharply to the southwest to cut across the open farmland that makes up the valley floor.

After crossing over the River Noe, you will begin to climb uphill to reach the small plateau known as the Lord’s Seat, where you will have a great sightline overlooking the Edale Valley. From here, make your way east along the ridge and climb slightly uphill to the summit of Mam Tor, where you will have some more spectacular views. Continue along the ridge to Hollins Cross, where you will descend the hillside and make your way back across the valley on the return to Edale.

Did this with my 7 year old hence taking 4.5 hours. Enjoyable for us both (he is a hiking regular, wouldn't recommend for small children or children not used to hiking) Went at 6am and we were the only people at summit. Stunning sunrise from 360 degrees. You can take the high trail for a genuine hike which can be challenging at times or the lower trail for a more gentle hike. Parked easy at the national trust car park and steps directly to summit. By the time we left crowd levels were high and there was no parking whatsoever. Car park had a pop up coffee stall. No toilet facilities. Views are the best I have seen in a long time!
