Although it is a beautiful route, the Dunstanburgh Castle Walk lacks signage for a good portion of its length. While this is slightly inconvenient, you can simply follow along the water’s edge as you traverse the beach portions of the trail. Asd you will be making your way through a variety of coastal terrain, you will want to wear walking shoes that are sturdy and comfortable. Additionally, those who want to fully explore the site of Dunstanburgh castle should book a ticket in advance to ensure that you are able to do so.

Featuring beautifully scenic views along the rugged Northumberland coastline, this walking route is perfectly suited for those who enjoy gazing out at the sea and visiting fascinating historical sites. While there is a cost to access Dunstanburgh Castle, the feeling of exploring the historic ruins and feeling as though you have been transported back in time is well worth the price of admission.

Setting out from the trailhead at Low Newton-by-the-Sea Beach, you will make your way to the south along the sands while enjoying the beautifully scenic views looking out onto St Mary’s Haven and the North Sea further afield.

After passing by the Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course, you will make your way along the water’s edge while enjoying views of Embleton Bay, continuing along the beach path before climbing uphill to meet up with a trail.

Following this trail to the southeast, you will eventually arrive at the magnificent site of Dunstanburgh Castle, a 14th Century coastal fortification that was built by Earl Thomas of Lancaster between 1313 and 1322. Here, you will be able to explore the impressive ruins of the castle, although it is operated by English Heritage, so there is a fee required to enter.

Take some time to explore the rich history of the site and take in the breathtaking views along the Northumberland coast that stretch out into the blue expanse of the North Sea. After spending some time here, you will simply head back along the same route to relive the natural beauty of the coast on the return leg of the Dunstanburgh Castle Coastal Walk.

Situated on the coast of Northumberland, Dunstanburgh Castle is a Medieval fortification that dates back to the 14th Century. The castle was constructed by Earl Thomas of Lancaster from 1313-1322 and was most likely meant to be a personal refuge from political turmoil, as the Earl strongly opposed King Edward II. The castle would later play a role in conflicts with the Scots and the later War of the Roses.
