Hamberg Hike
View PhotosGetting there
From Mayrhofen, take the B169 north towards Stumm. At the roundabout near Stumm, take the 1st exit onto the Dorfstraße ramp to Ried im Zillertal / Kaltenbach / Stumm, keep right and follow the road up to Stummerberg/Gattererberg. Continue following the small mountain road until you reach the vacation rental “Bergkristall”; make a left behind it. Drive straight ahead and pass the restaurant called Bergrast until you reach a small parking lot labelled with a wooden sign “Parkplatz für Wanderer.”There is a sign for Hamberg at the same place that leads you further up on the asphalt road. However, it is recommended that you park here and start the hike following the path into the woods.

Route Description for Hamberg Hike
Start hiking the big road into the woods following the sign at the beginning of the parking lot leading towards “Almluft über Windhag”.
Make a right at the first intersection to stay on the correct path. As you follow this path, there will be a turn into the woods after about 0.9mi.
As you climb through the woods, you will cross the road a couple of times. After another 0.9mi, turn right just after passing between two buildings. Turn right at the yellow sign following the “Hamberg” trail. As you rise the views expand into the valley below.
Continue, it feels like you’re going straight up, crossing the big road twice until you arrive at a small hut called Steinberg Hütte. The signs at the hut lead you around and continuing on this small path will eventually lead you to reach the summit.
Make sure you stay left at the last intersection in the middle of grassland. If you turn right, you will get to a private Hut and will quickly notice that the summit is in the other direction.
The views from the summit of Hamberg are wonderful, and if you have a picnic and the weather is nice, you’ll be tempted to spend quite a while here.
Return the same way, following the signs to Bergrast.
Insider Hints
The small hut in the middle of the hike is a perfect place to eat the snack you brought and enjoy the view around you.
Getting to the start of this hike can be a challenge. Just go to the town of Gattererberg and the parking is near Bergaus Zillertal-Stummerberg.

The trail is a lot easier, less challenging than I thought. It's actually a nice secluded hike, where you can enjoy the peaceful environment.
