Canyon View Trail Description

While this isn’t the longest route in Joshua Tree National Park, the Canyon View Trail covers a fair distance and is not recommended for families with young children. Large portions of the terrain are also sandy, making the route more physically demanding than it would otherwise be.

After leaving your car at the Black Rock Canyon Campground, locate the trailhead on the eastern side of Campground Road. Follow the California Riding and Hiking Trail south, where it will take you to a junction in the trail. At the junction, follow the eastern route over the gradually inclining terrain. The route will continue east – alongside craggy terrain to its south – before reaching another junction. Continue along your eastern heading until you reach a stream that may or may not have water in it, depending on the time of year.

Follow the southern path as it travels adjacent to the stream and through a small valley. After the valley, take the Eureka Peak Trail south as it makes its way through a canyon with large inclines on either side of it. The Eureka Peak Trail will then turn west shortly before veering northwards. Finally, after some more elevation fluctuation, the route heads west, where it will meet up with the Black Rock Canyon Trail and deliver you to the trailhead.
