The Shoshone Point Trail is a fantastic less travelled easy hike to gain some much-needed solitude from the crowds of Hermits Rest and Grand Canyon Village. A mostly flat route leads you out to a magnificent viewpoint that you will most likely be sharing with under a dozen people!

Getting there

To get to the Shoshone Point Trailhead, from Grand Canyon Village drive east along route 64, marked as going towards Desert View and Cameron. Notice after approximately 11.0mi that you will pass the turnoff for Grandview Point. From here it's all eyes up – looking to your left for a small dirt parking lot with a gated road at the end. This turnoff is less than 2.0mi from that for Grandview.

Shoshone Point Trail Description

To begin the Shoshone Point hike, start in the parking lot and walk around the locked gate. Though this entire hike is on a double track dirt road, the views are well worth it! You will continue along this rather dull, flat road for just over a mile.

Luckily, for those leaving late or wanting a picnic lunch, there are plenty oftrees along the trail that offer ample shade. As you near the end of the path, you will notice a large buildup of picnic tables, shade giving awnings, fire pits, and even a toilet! This area can be rented out by the public, and is also used by the park for special functions. What a place to have a party!

From the end of the trail you will be granted amazing views down through the canyon. Continuing all the way out onto the point (obvious from the large picnicking area) will practically give you 360-degree panoramic views! The point is truly a point, simply a white rock jutting out as bare as a diving board.

Here your next task will be to relax and take in the stunning scenery. Hopefully you brought a snack and a tasty beverage to help you unwind and admire.

Insider Hints

  • This truly is the greatest picnic area in the park.

  • If there appears to be some sort of function going on (look for an especially full parking lot), steer clear!

If you're looking for a great hike you can do with your children in the park, this would be a great one. Trail was mostly flat, plus it's super short and easy.
