The Skunk Canyon hike takes you through one of the scenic canyons in the Walnut Canyon National Monument. This hike is easy, requires almost no elevation gain, and offers great canyon views the whole way. It can get hot in the summertime, so make sure you bring water. On the flip side, you might need microspikes in the wintertime. Expect moderate traffic on this hike.

Skunk Canyon Hike Description

The Skunk Canyon hike is a mostly flat, scenic route on the edge of Flagstaff in the Walnut Canyon National Monument. You’ll make your way through a beautiful canyon on a very relaxed trail, appreciating the rock layers and the interesting habitat that the canyons in this region support.

This hike gets hot in the summertime and snowy/icy in the wintertime. Bring lots of water and consider microspikes if you’re out in the off-season.

Beginning from the trailhead, the route is very easy to follow. You’ll enter Skunk Canyon and follow it all the way to the trail’s end, appreciating the pools, flowing creek, birds, and rock walls of the canyon. If you want to hike a bit further, you can head over to Fisher Point for a nice view of Walnut Canyon. Otherwise, turn around and retrace your steps.
