Paved Lava Flow Trail Description

Northern Arizona, particularly the Flagstaff area, has a fascinating volcanic past. Remnants of this past are evident in the volcanic rocks, craters, and volcanic mountains that define the area. Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is a great example of this, and the Paved Lava Flow Trail explores this area on a route accessible for hikers in wheelchairs, with strollers, or otherwise requiring a paved, mostly flat route. Should you want the full loop, check out our Lava Flow Trail guide.

Note that there are 2 designated accessible parking spaces in the paved parking lot. Both are van-accessible. The trail is paved with a section of wooden bridge with railings. It’s generally about 5 feet wide or more and the grade is 3% or less. There are benches along the trail for rests if needed. There is a wheelchair-accessible restroom at the east end of the trail.

The hike starts off as a paved path departing from the trailhead parking area. There are picnic benches here in case you want to spend some time relaxing before or after your hike. A few steps into the trail, you’ll encounter a trail split. Stay left onto Lava Flow Trail and then left twice again as you explore the loop. This will lead you back to the trailhead.
