Lizard Lake Trail Description

Hiking the Lizard Lake Trail is a great way to get out and experience the natural beauty of the mountainous landscape around Fernie. This wilderness trail is fairly rugged and overgrown but also well-travelled. It’s an adventurous journey that casual and experienced hikers alike can enjoy, albeit with varying degrees of difficulty based on experience and physical fitness. Hikers should remember to travel in groups, make lots of noise, and bring bear spray for this hike due to the relatively frequent sightings of grizzly bears in the area.

Setting out from the parking area, you will follow the trail, enter into the forest cover and quickly cross Lizard Creek. From here, continue on the trail as it follows a westward path through a beautiful stretch of old-growth forest. From here, the trail will turn to the south, and you will eventually break out of the tree cover on the approach to the edge of Lizard Lake. Take some time to explore the scenic subalpine terrain around the lake with the rugged Lizard Range standing proudly overhead and the majestic peak of Mount Fernie across the valley behind you. After taking in the views, head back down the trail and through the forest to return to your vehicle.
