Drake’s Trail Description

While Drake’s Trail isn’t really all that difficult, the overall length is the real challenge. Make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, as you will be covering a lot of ground through a variety of terrain, including city walkways, open farmland, and rugged hillsides. You should also make travel arrangements prior to setting out on your adventure, as this is a one-way walk that would otherwise require you to travel the entire 14.9mi back to the trailhead.

Even with the long distance, this is an amazing walking route that will allow you to explore much of the picturesque Devon countryside, as well as parts of Dartmoor National Park and several towns along the trail. While it is a long route, the terrain here is relatively easy to navigate and traverse, making it – or at least manageable portions of it – suitable for children to walk along. Whether you are simply after a long distance walking route or just want to explore the western reaches of Dartmoor National Park, Drake’s Trail is a fun option for taking in the natural beauty of the countryside.

Setting out from the car park in Plympton, make your way north along the Plym Valley Trail as it runs parallel to the winding banks of the River Plym. Travelling through the charming woodland terrain, you will leave the chaos of the city behind and enjoy a feeling of relaxation along the river’s edge. After 1.9mi along the trail, you will arrive at a crossing over the River Plym that features a viewpoint where you can spot Peregrine Falcons. Make your way across the viaduct and continue along the forested path to the northwest.

Keep straight along the path for 3.0mi, crossing over several viaducts that span the river, before passing through the wonderfully atmospheric forests that surround Dewerstone Rock. This area is said to be haunted by a roaming pack of phantom hounds that chase humans to their demise on the rocky terrain of Dewerstone Rock, so maybe pick up the pace as you make your way across the woodland landscape.

Continue along the path as it bends to the northwest and skirts along the edge of the Yelverton Golf Club, before passing through the village of Yelverton itself. Beyond the village, you will make your way through some undulating forest terrain and cross over the River Walkham, which will mark the final leg of the journey to the end point of the trail in Tavistock. After strolling through the southern portion of the town, you will turn to the west and cross over the River Tavy, following along the Tavistock Canal until you arrive in the heart of the town. From here, you can pop into a nearby pub or cafe for some post-walk refreshments, or begin making your way back to the trailhead via your pre-arranged method of transportation.

Insider Hints

  • Comfortable walking shoes will be needed for this adventure.

  • Bring plenty of water and snacks to stay fueled along your walk.

  • Remember to sort out travel arrangements for your return to the trailhead prior to setting out on your walk.
