The Cassidy Arch trail is one of the most popular hikes in Capitol Reef National Park. This trail is a fantastic out-and-back route to the Cassidy Arch: a formation named after Wild West outlaw Butch Cassidy. The Cassidy Arch trail itself is a moderately challenging route that offers hikers incredible panoramic views of the Utah desert.

The Cassidy Arch Trail Description
The Cassidy Arch Trail is one of the most iconic hikes in Capitol Reef National Park. This trail is very popular, so we recommend you head out early in the day to beat the crowds (and the heat). The Cassidy Arch trail does have some exposed sections so it might not be the best choice if you have a fear of heights, and if you are hiking with children be sure they stay well away from the edge of the trail.
If you don’t have a ton of time to tour around Capitol Reef National Park, definitely make the Cassidy Arch trail a priority. This short hike gives you breath-taking panoramic views of the Utah desert and the terrain will give you a pretty decent workout. The Cassidy Arch itself is a beautiful formation that is well worth a visit.
From the trailhead, follow the path northeast for 0.2mi to a divide. Take a sharp left at the divide to head west. Continue westward for 1 mile to the next divide, take another left here to follow the path 0.3mi to the Cassidy Arch.
Take a break at the arch and catch your breath before turning around and following the same route back to the trailhead. If you’re not done for the day, consider extending your time in the area by hiking the Grand Wash Trail or the Frying Pan Trail.

The Cassidy Arch is an impressive sandstone formation that spans a large chasm. This arch is named after Butch Cassidy, a gun-slingin’ outlaw and leader of a gang known as the “Wild Bunch,” who were active in the late 1800s. The Wild Bunch earned their infamous status by robbing banks and trains in the Wild West. Cassidy famously used the twisting canyons and rugged terrain of the Utah desert to hide from the law and evade capture.
