Joder Ranch Hike Description

The Joder Ranch Hike is the perfect adventure for those seeking a secluded, relaxing nature walk through the countryside. Trek along the exposed meadowlands, which reveal wonderful views of the encompassing wilderness but warrant unbearably hot treks in the summer months. If you are planning on walking this route on a warm summer day we would suggest heading out in the early morning! Note there have been rattlesnakes sighted along the path, so keep an ear and eye out for them as you walk. Don’t forget, parking is not allowed along Olde Stage Road, so park in the lot off Highway 36.

Wander through lush grasslands and enjoy the sounds of the wind whistling through the fields along the Joder Ranch Hike. This charming nature walk guides adventurers through the old pastures of the Joder Ranch which boast jaw-dropping views of the surrounding mountainous landscape. The stimulating path will also guide hikers up and over a saddle in the Hogback Ridge and through the sparse shade of ponderosa pines. Perfect for families and those seeking a relaxing nature walk, the Joder Ranch Hike is worth adding to your Boulder itinerary.

Embark on your adventure along the Joder Ranch Hike from the trailhead off Highway 36. From here, the trail will guide adventurers west, past the Joder Reservoir. The initial section of the hike delivers amazing views of the encompassing mountains, including distant views of the Flatirons. Enjoy the rolling hills that surround the pasture and continue hiking along the dirt route. The Joder Ranch Trail will then curve northwest, gradually ascending towards the Hogback Ridge. Enjoy the smell of the fresh air and the sequestered nature of the hike.

As you begin to climb the ridge, the path will become increasingly forested—appreciate the sparse shade of the ponderosa pines. Be sure to keep an eye out for grazing deer here! After climbing through the saddle of the ridge, hikers will quickly meet the trail’s end at Olde Stage Road. This marks your turnaround point. To get back to the trailhead, all you must do is retrace your footing along the path. As you wander east you will be granted views of Haystack Mountain in the east. Enjoy the trek back and make sure to take plenty of photos!

Trail Highlights

Joder Ranch

In 1954, Anna Best Joder began her horse ranch with the purchase of over 600 acres of land near Boulder, CO. Straddling Highway 36, she owned an expansive amount of territory in Boulder County. The ranch quickly flourished, housing over 90 Arabian horses, including the award-winning Arabian stallion– Ibn Rogue. Anna eventually passed the ranch down to her son who hosted dozens of horse shows and promoted community engagement. It wasn’t until a few years ago when the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks acquired the ranch. With only one trail now, the city will expand the network of routes over the next few years, attracting outdoor enthusiasts of all sorts.
