Green Mountain West Trail Description

The Green Mountain West Trail is the easiest of Boulder’s Big Three summit hikes, the other two being Bear Peak and South Boulder Peak. This charming adventure is one for the books! More easily manageable than the flatirons, this path delivers epic, unparalleled views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The initial segment of this hike is level prior to dipping below the tree coverage of towering pines and climbing up to the summit. Perfect for those seeking an introductory hike to summit adventurers, this path will challenge you, but won’t over-exhaust you. Open-year, round, those who venture in the winter months will have a more sequestered experience. If you hike in the off-season, be sure to wear microspikes to navigate the inevitably icy terrain. It is also worth noting that there are steep sections near the summit, so be prepared for a butt burner!

The Green Mountain West Trail packs a punch. Wonderful for conditioning before summiting a Colorado 14er or simply just to get out into the fresh air, this hike checks all the boxes. Additionally, this hike presents the perfect opportunity to spot wildlife. As you wander through the grasslands and up through the pine forests, you will likely spot grazing deer, elk, or maybe even prairie dogs! Kids, adults, experts, and novice hikers alike will love the Green Mountain West Trail just as much as we do! What are you waiting for? Let’s go!

Embark on your adventure along the Green Mountain West Trail from the trailhead off Flagstaff Road. From the trailhead, the Green Mountain West Ridge Trail tracks east through an exposed grassland. As you hike along the exposed terrain enjoy views of the surrounding foothills. You’ll notice Bear Creek in the south as you near the base of Green Mountain. Eventually, you will encounter an intersection. Here, keep left and you will begin your ascent up the western flank of Green Mountain. Beginning your climb, the terrain will become increasingly forested, though still sparse enough to deliver epic vistas.

The further you climb into the wilderness the steeper the path. Navigate the switchbacks, ignoring intersecting and merging paths. Be mindful of your footing as you climb up the steep path. Enjoy the sporadic shade of the towering pines, you will soon ascend the peak. From the summit of Green Mountain, you will be rewarded with expansive views of the Front Range snow-capped peaks. Either the amazing sights or steep climb will take your breath away. Notice Longs Peak and its neighboring craggy peaks that line the horizon in the west and enjoy sights of Bear Peak and South Boulder Peak in the south. After reveling in the panoramic vistas, retrace your footing along the path all the way back to the trailhead, making the end of your adventure.
