Neversink Trail

The Neversink Trail is an accessible walk for hikers of all skill levels along the picturesque Gunnison River. This trail is advertised as wheelchair and stroller-friendly, but that statement is a bit deceiving. The initial segment of the path is well maintained, level and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, but once you encounter the first bridge you will have to turn around. The first bridge does not ramp up, instead it steps up to the river crossing, so it is unsuitable for wheelchairs or strollers beyond this point. Due to its close proximity to the Gunnison River, this trail is subject to flooding in the Spring. Note that there are restrooms and a picnic area at the trailhead which is a perfect location to stop and have some lunch after a long day in the car.

The Neversink Trail is our favorite trail to stop and stretch your legs after a long day in the car. The Neversink Trail is just outside of the town of Gunnison and on your way into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. If you’ve got small children, this trail is perfect! Explore the riverbanks, skip rocks, and watch anglers as they wade the river’s waters. The Neversink Trail is also great for birdwatching. Take a seat on one of several benches that line the trail and keep your eyes peeled for Bald Eagles and American Dippers.

Begin this route from the parking lot and picnic area and head east along the Neversink Trail. This section of the trail will guide you through the lush Colorado woodland before opening up to the river. Walk along the riverbanks before crossing the first bridge. Beyond this point is inaccessible to strollers and wheelchairs. Cross the bridge and find yourself on a little island between the rivers.

Follow the trail across the island. Keep an eye out for beaver dams and beavers as you walk between the river’s branches. Cross the next bridge. At this point the brush along the path is a bit overgrown, but nonetheless the trail is still easy to navigate. Follow the trail through the brush back out to the riverbank. Enjoy the ambiance of the running river and watch as anglers fish the waters. Continue along the trail until its evident endpoint.

Turn around and retrace your steps back to the parking lot.
