The Chasm View Trail Description

The Chasm View Trail is a short nature walk that overlooks the cliffs of the Black Canyon and the Gunnison River. Note that this photogenic trail has limited parking. If the lot is full consider parking In the Ranger Station Parking Lot and walking down. This scenic trail follows along the edge of the Canyon and is fenced in. Respect the fence and do not venture off the trail as it can be dangerous.

We could not recommend the Chasm View Walk more. Though this trail is not a long hike, this lovely trail to the Chasm View lookout is awesome. The striking views of the steep-walled, narrow Black Canyon and the Gunnison River below will do nothing short of impress visitors. The vistas you will experience at the lookout are unparalleled. This walk is perfect for photographers, nature buffs, and bird watchers alike. Make sure to bring your camera because this trail presents endless photo opportunities.

Begin this trail from the Chasm View Trailhead off of the parking lot. This short circuit can be completed in either direction, but we recommend going counterclockwise. Head southwest along the trail. You will walk through some sagebrush before arriving at the lookout point.

From the lookout point, you will be able to see down the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and the Gunnison River below. Note that you will also get impressive views of Serpent Point and the Painted Wall from this lookout.

The Painted Wall is an impressive section of the Canyon that resembles a well marbled piece of steak! This impressive cliff of dark grey granite is contrasted by bands of thick white marbling. This is one of the coolest and most popular walls of the Black Canyon. Make sure to snap a photo!

Below the Painted Wall runs the Gunnison River. The river snakes through the Canyon and looks incredibly small among the steep canyon walls. Marvel in the rocky scenery before hooking back onto the path.

Walk along the path as it follows along the North Rim before curving you back to the parking lot.

Insider Hints

  • Stay at the North Rim Campground just north of the trail. This popular campground has sites that overlook the Canyon. Make sure to arrive early to secure a site, as they are first come first serve.

  • The Chasm View lookout is a great spot to watch the sunset and sunrise.

  • Pack a lunch and have a picnic overlooking the impressive Canyon!
