Eaton Canyon Trail

The Eaton Canyon Trail is a very popular hiking route in Los Angeles County, and as such, you will need to arrive early to secure parking and beat out the crowds. Additionally, the terrain will become a bit more rugged as you approach the falls, so be sure to wear proper hiking footwear in order to safely traverse the trail.

Although it is a popular hike, it is for good reason, as the beauty of the Eaton Canyon landscape and the Eaton Canyon Falls themselves are truly magical. In addition to the wonderful scenery, you will also have the chance to visit the Eaton Canyon Nature Center and its fascinating exhibits, making for a fun day out on the trails.

Setting out from the parking area off Altadena Road, you will make your way to the northeast along Veranada Avenue and pass by the Eaton Canyon Nature Center. Whether you decide to visit the center before or after your hike, it is certainly an attraction to visit, as there are plenty of free and informative exhibits to check out.

Reaching the end of Veranada Avenue, you will continue on to the north and pick up the footpath that will take you into the canyon. After 125ft, keep right at the fork and continue on for another 0.2mi, where you will cross over to the opposite bank of Eaton Creek.

Here, you will keep left and follow the path through the canyon floor, enjoying the views over the next 0.4mi, before arriving at another junction in the trail. Taking the path on the left, you will make your way to the northwest along the trail as it runs parallel to the creek for another 0.3mi, where you will turn right at a junction.

Continuing alongside the creek, you will pass by some landslide debris and arrive at a fork after 0.3mi. Bear left here and make your way underneath the bridge, following the trail as it runs alongside the creek and enters into Eaton Canyon proper.

The terrain here will become a bit more rugged, requiring you to clamber over rocks at certain points in order to arrive at the falls after 0.5mi. Here, you can sit and gaze out at the cascading water of the Eaton Canyon Falls and pause for a quick snack. After taking in the sights, simply head back along the same route to relive the scenery and terrain of the Eaton Canyon Trail.
