Black Mountain Trail Description
The hike to the top of Black Mountain is a challenging route for experienced hikers. This trail is steep and ends with an exposed scramble, so hikers should be prepared with proper footwear, plenty of water and snacks, and relevant experience. Dogs are allowed to join you on this adventure; however, they must be kept on leash at all times. If you are hiking this route in the summer, be sure to start early, as there is not much shade on this route and the trail gets seriously hot in the afternoon sun. No matter when you go, the Black Mountain Trail is an undeniably gorgeous route! Above the treeline you will find yourself with incredible 360 degree views of Salt Lake City and the surrounding wilderness. If you’re up for the challenge, this hike is worth it.
From the trailhead, follow the Terrace Trail eastward, then continue along on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail to head north. At the large intersection of trails just under a mile from the trailhead, take the Twin Peaks Trail and follow it eastward until you see a sign for the Black Mountain Trail. Follow the Black Mountain Trail east all the way to the summit.
Take a well-deserved rest at the top of Black Mountain and admire the views of the valleys below, before turning around and following the same route back to the trailhead.
