If you are seeking a diverse and stimulating hike in the Sawatch Mountain Range, then the Fooses Creek Trail is right for you. This exciting adventure will reveal the diversity and natural beauty of the Colorado wilderness, as you venture through woodlands, aspen groves, luxuriant meadows, and alpine tundras. Exhibiting views of the encompassing craggy peaks, this trek is anything but ordinary. Open year-round, this epic excursion can also be enjoyed in the winter months, provided you arrive prepared with a pair of handy dandy snowshoes.
Embark on your adventure along the Fooses Creek Trail from the Colorado Trail Segment 15 Trailhead. From here, head southwest along the Colorado Trail Segment 15/ Fooses Creek Road. Follow this route through the dense woodlands and you will shortly meet an intersection. Turn left here and follow the Colorado Trail south, keeping close to the curves of the South Fooses Creek that will guide you through a verdant corridor between towering Sawatch peaks. Revel in the grandeur of the encompassing summits and you will soon be led into the alpine tundra.
The terrain here will become increasingly steep as you near the pass. Climb up the vertiginous terrain and you will be granted panoramic vistas of the mountainous landscape from the Divide. Admire the sights of the snow-capped peaks that flank the verdant woodlands below and, when you are done enjoying the scenery, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
