Although it isn’t an overly challenging route, the Alnmouth to Warkworth Walk does traverse some rugged coastal terrain, which will require proper walking shoes to safely traverse. Additionally, the beach portion of this route doesn’t feature a trail and will require some very basic navigation, so bring a GPS if you are worried about losing your way. Lastly, you will need to pay an entrance fee if you are hoping to fully explore Warkworth Castle.
Featuring historic ruins and beautifully scenic views across the North Sea, the Alnmouth to Warkworth Walk is a fantastic adventure that is suitable for walkers of nearly every skill level. Setting out from the Alnmouth railway station, you will make your way east through Hipsburn, following along South View/B1338 for 0.5mi before picking up a footpath on your right. Heading towards the south, you will follow the path as it traverses a marshy stretch of land along the River Aln for 0.4mi, eventually veering west to arrive near the edge of a road. Here, the trail will turn back to the south and run parallel to the road, continuing on for another 0.9mi to arrive at a junction.
Turning to the left and ontlo a lane, you will keep right along it for the next 0.6mi, where you will eventually turn left onto a footpath that will lead you down to the beach. This section of the route doesn’t feature a trail and utilizes the beach, so just make sure to keep the sea on your left, which shouldn’t be too troubling of a task.
Continue along the beach for the next 1.9mi and take some time to appreciate the stunning views looking out onto the North Sea, before picking up a trail on your right that will lead you away from the water’s edge. Keeping straight here for 0.6mi, you will head west and through the Warkworth Dunes Picnic Site to eventually arrive at the edge of the A1068.
Make a left here and cross the bridge over the River Coquet, following the road for 0.3mi through Warkworth to pick up a trail on your right at a bend in the road. From here, you will follow the path past the impressive 12th Century ruins of Warkworth Castle, where you will arrive at the endpoint of the Alnmouth to Warkworth Walk.

Warkworth Castle
Situated in the village of Warkworth along the banks of the River Coquet, Warkworth Castle is an impressive fortification that dates back to the 12th Century. The castle was built either by Prince Henry of Scotland, Earl of Northumbria, or possibly by King Henry II of England, although it is unclear which exactly is responsible. The originally timber-built structure was later converted to stone in the 13th Century, during periods of heightened conflict with the neighbouring Scots.
