Desolation Canyon Trail Description
Average in length, but with a fair amount of elevation fluctuations in relation to its distance, the Desolation Canyon Trail is ideal for families with older children or those who are seeking a more casual hiking experience. While beautiful, the Desolation Canyon Trail is within the arid desert environment of Death Valley National Park, and so it is important that you prepare yourself for the conditions. Bring lots of water and make sure you wear sunscreen and a hat!
Having located the trailhead, follow the Desolation Canyon Trail east. The terrain is relatively flat at first, but as the path veers to the southeast, the incline will become steeper. Continuing along the trail, you will soon arrive at the canyon entrance. From here, the canyon walls will grow steeper and more imposing as you make your way through.
The Desolation Canyon Trail will end at a short plateau, where you should take the opportunity to rest and enjoy the scenery. Once you’re ready, simply backtrack your steps towards the trailhead and your waiting vehicle.
