Del Campo Peak is a long, technical hike. This is a great choice for hikers looking to expand their scrambling skills and build confidence on technical trails, and for that reason, we don’t recommend it for beginners. It’s a 10.7mi trek to the summit with 4350ft of elevation gain to complete, so come prepared for a full (fun!) day on the mountain. A helmet is a good idea on this hike.

There is a campsite about a third of the way into the trail if you’d like to make a backpacking trip out of it.

Del Campo Peak Trail Description

Del Campo Peak is a very fun hike, but it’s best suited to those keen to push themselves with extended scrambling sections. If that sounds like you, you’ll have a great day out here. Of course, we recommend waiting for a dry, clear day to do this hike.

Begin from the trailhead, taking Monte Cristo Trail south. The trail is mostly flat to start. You’ll pass two intersections where you’ll stay right at both to get onto Gothic Basin Trail. Cross the creek and walk past the campground.

Your trail begins to gain elevation once you arrive at the foot of the peak. Hike towards the chute/valley and look to your left about 1/3 of the way up. This is where you will veer off and ascend. If you keep climbing up the chute, you will end up at a dead end with no safe way to the top.

You’ll roughly traverse across the eastern face of the peak, crossing several streams and grinding through long steep sections. The scrambling sections you’ll complete here are long and warrant the use of a helmet. Cresting the lakeshore, enjoy a moment of solitude by the water before the final push to the top of the peak.

On the way down, follow the same route, taking your time until you’re safely on solid ground again.
