The Helmsley and Riccal Dale Walk is a great route in North York Dales National Park that features an historic market town and a good variety of terrain to explore. While out on the trail, you will walk the historic streets of Helmsley and cross the open countryside before exploring the tranquil woodland landscape of Riccal Dale. While most of the paths are well-maintained, some forested portions of the walk may be muddy after a good rainfall, requiring proper walking boots to better traverse the trail.
Getting there
To get to the car park for the Helmsley and Riccal Dale Walk from Pickering, make your way west for 12.9mi along Hungate/A170 and continue straight through the roundabout to follow Market Place for 160ft. Turn left here to enter the car park.

If the aim of your walk is to enjoy a bit of solitude outdoors while making your way along a scenic trail set in the picturesque North York Moors, then you will definitely want to add the Helmsley and Riccal Dale Walk to your list of upcoming adventures.
Setting out from the trailhead in the market town of Helmsley, you will head east along the historic city streets, before climbing uphill across the open countryside to the northeast in order to reach the edge of Riccal Dale. From here, you will descend the forested trail to meet up with the River Riccal, following its winding banks to the north, as you relax in the riverside setting and further explore the dale.
Reaching the northernmost point of the walk near Hasty Bank Farm, you will turn to the south and climb uphill, making your way along the edge of the forest before descending back into the dale. Here, you will cross over a footbridge and meet up with the path from the initial portion of your walk, following it back across the countryside and into Helmsley, where you began your journey.
