The Helmsley and River Rye Walk is a quick and relatively easy journey in North York Moors National Park that will expose you to a lovely riverside setting with charming views. While out walking the trail, you will pass by the ruins of Helmsley castle and leave the town behind, strolling along the winding banks of the River Rye as you relax in nature. There are a couple of steady climbs along the route; however, the majority of the trail is flat, making for a great family walking route.

Getting there

To get to the trailhead for the Helmsley and River Rye Walk from Pickering, head west on Hungate/A170 for 12.9mi and keep straight through the roundabout onto Market Place. Follow this for 160ft and turn left to enter the car park.

Helmsley and River Rye Walk Description

If the aim of your walk is to relax outdoors and take in some picturesque riverside scenery, then the Helmsley and River Rye Walk is the perfect route for you. Featuring views of a 12th Century castle and set within an idyllic countryside setting, this walk in the North York Moors is perfectly suited to allow walkers to disconnect from the outside world and take in the beauty of the landscape.

Setting out from the car park in Helmsley, you will head to the south along the historic streets and buildings, passing by the castle on your right to meet up with the banks of the River Rye. Continue on along the winding edge of the river, making your way tot the southeast as you leave the market town behind and transition into the picturesque countryside.

Eventually, you will head west and cross over the river, making your way back to the north along its western bank for the opposite view of the landscape. As you make your way back towards the village, you will have a great view of the ruins of the once imposing Castle Helmsley overlooking the town. After meeting up with the road, follow it north to return to the car park where you began.
