Maiden Castle and Harker Moor Walk

Walking the Maiden Castle and Harker Moor Trail is a fantastic adventure that will be of particular interest to anyone fascinated by Iron Age history. In addition to the stunning views across the Yorkshire Dales, this route features a large earthwork structure known as Maiden Castle. The site is a bit confusing and blends in with the moor, making it difficult to spot if you aren’t paying attention! There are also some steep climbs along the route, so don’t forget to wear sturdy walking boots for the journey.

Setting out from the car park in Reeth, you will make your way to the southwest through the town, before crossing over the River Swale. Once you are on the opposite side, you will continue across the open countryside and follow the river bank to the west before turning to the southwest along Swale Hall Lane to reach the site of Maiden Castle. Take some time to explore the large, ancient structure before continuing on your journey.

Making your way to the southwest, you will work your way uphill across the moor, traversing the steep terrain to reach the top of High Harker Hill. From this small plateau, you will enjoy sweeping views that include the valleys, hills, and moors of the surrounding area. Continue on to the east to begin your descent of the hillside, following the trail as it turns north to cross back over the River Swale on the return to the trailhead in Reeth.
