Conistone Dib and Mossdale Scar Walk Description

While it may be rugged and challenging to navigate in certain areas, the Conistone Dib and Mossdale Scar Walk is a fantastic journey that will give you an appreciation for the variety of terrain that can be found within Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Setting out from Grassington, you will head to the northwest and climb uphill across the open countryside, before making a descent into the village of Conistone. After walking the village streets, you will turn to the northeast and climb back uphill across the rugged and rocky terrain of the moor, taking in the beautiful views across the barren landscape.

Reaching a hanging valley characterized by the imposing crag known as Mossdale Scar, you will arrive at the northeastern point of the route at the Mossdale Caverns. Take some time to explore the area; however, it is advised not to enter the cavern system, as it is the site of the 1967 Mossdale Caving Disaster in which six young men entered the caverns and never returned. From here, head south across the undulating terrain of the moor and keep an eye on your GPS, as it can be tricky to navigate the return to the trailhead in Grassington.
