The Bolton Abbey and the River Wharfe Walk is an amazing adventure in Yorkshire Dales National Park that will provide the chance to visit interesting historical sites and take in some scenic views. While out on the trail, you will make your way along the winding banks of the River Wharfe and take in views across the valley, all while stopping in at unique historical sites like the Bolton Priory and Barden Tower. This is certainly a great walking route for those interested in local history.
Getting there
To get to the trailhead for Bolton Abbey and the River Wharfe Walk from Addingham, drive north on Bolton Road for 2.2mi and take the second exit at the roundabout onto B6160, following it for 0.2mi. Make a right and continue on for 112ft to find parking on the right.

If you are looking to explore a peaceful valley set in the Yorkshire Dales that is packed full of natural beauty and interesting historical sites, then the Bolton Abbey and the River Wharfe Walk is an exceptional tral that you should definitely try.
Setting out from the trailhead in Bolton Bridge, you will make your way to the northeast along the banks of the River Wharf, using either the stepping stones or the foot bridge to reach the opposite side of the river. From here, you will continue along the river as it bends to the northwest, enjoying the views across the valley until you arrive at another bridge next to the Cavendish Pavilion. Crossing over the river once more, follow along the water’s edge to the northwest.
As you meander along the banks of the River Wharfe, you will pass by the Bolton Abbey Aqueduct and the 15th Century Barden Tower before crossing Barden Bridge to reach the east bank of the river. Follow this to the southeast and enjoy the views across Wharfedale from the opposite perspective, as you make your way back to the crossing at the Cavendish Pavilion. Crossing over the river for the final time, make your way to the southwest to arrive at the historic Bolton Priory. Take some time to explore this fascinating religious/historical site before continuing to the southwest on the final leg back to the trailhead.
