Russet Lake Trail Description

The Hike to Russet Lake is a lengthy point-to-point trail with a gradual elevation gain of over 6562ft, making this route feel like a bit of a slog at times. While the hike can certainly be done as an overnight trek with a stay near Russet Lake, the one-way nature of this route and its end point at the (free) gondola down to the village make it perfect for a 15.5mi single day trip. No matter how you decide to tackle this epic hike up to the Fitzsimmons range, you will be treated to some amazing views of the surrounding mountains and the picturesque Russet Lake.

Setting out from the parking area at Whistler Village, make your way along the Singing Pass trail as it skirts alongside Fitzsimmons Creek. This trail will take you all the way along the gradual uphill climb to Russet Lake. To do so, keep straight along the trail for 7.0mi, where you will reach a fork in the trail. Follow it left to approach the beautiful waters of Russet Lake and the Kees and Claire Hut. This can be used for overnight stays in the area, providing accommodation, cooking facilities, and space to dry out your gear.

After visiting the lake, make your way back to the fork in the trail and follow the path to the left to continue uphill along the Musical Bumps Trail. This route will take you over Oboe and Flute summits before diverting to the right around Piccolo Summit on the way to Roundhouse Lodge. This entire stretch of the Musical Bumps Trail has some amazing mountain views, so be sure to take them in along this final portion of the hike. When you get to the lodge, you will have completed the Hike to Russet Lake and can make the much quicker return journey by using the gondola to get back to the village below.
