The A River Runs Through It Trail is a 5.6mi out-and-back hiking route in Whistler that features scenic views and a good variation in terrain. This route winds through the woodlands that can be found west of the village and crosses over several creeks to reach a marshy area that provides the opportunity to view some of the local wildlife. With well-maintained trails, a modest elevation gain, and nice views of the valley and surrounding mountains, this route is a pleasant trek for hikers of all skill levels.

Getting there

To reach the parking area for A River Runs Through It Trail from Whistler, drive north on BC-99 N and make a left turn onto Alpine Way. Make another left onto Rainbow Drive and continue on it for 0.7mi, where it becomes Alta Lake Road. Keep on Alta Lake Road for another 1.9mi and turn left to enter Rainbow Park, where you will find the parking lot on your left.

A River Runs Through It Trail Description

A River Runs Through It Trail is an easy 5.6mi hike that sets out from Rainbow Park along the shores of Alta Lake and heads north through the woodlands that can be found on the western edge of Whistler. The trail follows along some nicely maintained pathways that climb gently uphill and cross over several creeks, while skirting around the edge of a marshy landscape that is home to a number of local bird species. Along the trail, hikers will be able to steal a few glances of the valley and surrounding mountains but the main point of focus along this leisurely walk is the spectacular forest scenery that you will be hiking through. The intermediate length and easy-going nature of this trail make it perfect for an afternoon or weekend hike in the Whistler area.
