Mount Finlayson Loop Hike Description
While there are other routes up to the summit of Mount Finlayson, this specific trail forms a loop up to the summit that can be completed in either direction. Due to a rocky stretch of trail near the summit of the mountain, you should wear proper hiking footwear and avoid this route in the rain to have the best traction while out on the trail.
The Mount Finlayson Loop is a fantastic hike that will get your heart pumping and provide you with some breathtaking views across the rugged rolling green hills of the surrounding area and the vast blue expanse of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. While the route can be completed in either direction, this purely depends on if you want to tackle the rocky scramble on the way up or the way down. For the purpose of this guide, the route will climb up a series of switchbacks that bring you along the backside of the mountain, followed by a descent along the rocky south side of the peak.
Setting out from the parking lot at the Bear Mountain Resort, follow the road leading to the north for 656ft, before branching off on a trail to the left that heads toward Mount Finlayson. Keep left through the junctions for 492ft, where you will arrive at an intersection with the main trail. After 197ft, you will come to a series of quick junctions. Keep left at the first and second junctions, and right at the third to begin the loop portion of the hike.
Follow the trail as it leads through a nice stretch of forest and begins to gain elevation through a series of switchbacks leading up the mountain. The trail will start to become more rocky as you work your way above the tree cover and onto the summit. Once there, you will have an amazing sightline overlooking the forests and hills of Goldstream Provincial Park, the Bear Mountain Resort, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca off in the distance.
After enjoying the breathtaking views, follow the trail to the south as it begins to descend a part of the trail that is much more rocky and technical. You will likely need to use your hands to balance yourself, so make sure to keep an eye on the trail markers to stay on the right track. After roughly 1312ft, you will come to a junction in the trail. Follow this to the left to meet up with the main trail, taking it back to the parking area where you began your journey along the Mount Finlayson Loop.
