A popular backpacking trail, the hike out to Notch lake takes hikers into the heart the High Uintas’ lake country. Passing by Clegg and Dean Lakes, the final vistas across Notch Lake are inspiring. You might be inclined to bring your tent on your second visit!
Getting there
From Kamas head along Utah 150 for 29.1mi. After seeing signs for Bald Mountain Pass, watch out for a trailhead sign to your left, signed as the Bald Mountain Picnic Area.

Route Description for Notch Lake
Head out past the pit toilets and veer left at the junction near the picnic tables. You will begin to descend down the wide, rocky path into the valley. Continue northwest and note that the general trend of the path heading out to Notch Lake is down, though not at a steep grade. It does mean the return will be at an incline.
After passing over a short plateau you will descend to the west side of Clegg Lake. Clegg Lake is quite a nice, little introduction to the stunning lakes you will encounter later on in the hike.
Shortly after passing Clegg Lake, you will sweep around Dean Lake from a lofty vantage point, a few hundred feet up. Then, you will finish the descent down to Notch Lake. This is by far the largest of the lakes on this trail and yields the greatest views.
Across the Lake, Notch Mountain will take up most of your view; however, the calm water of Notch Lake does have its own impressive charm. After taking a break at this stunning alpine wonder, return the way you came.
