Steall Falls and the Nevis Gorge Walk Description

Steall Falls and the Nevis Gorge Walk may be a family favourite, thanks to the awe-inspiring Highland views packed into a few kilometres, but there are still some route technicalities to consider. Look out for steep drops as you wander along the rocky path. It may be well-marked and easy-to-follow, but care is necessary. Keep your dogs, and kids close!

We can’t say it enough, but the unreal valley scenery flanked by snow-dusted hills makes for an outstanding adventure. Then there’s also the river cutting below grassy slopes while Steall Falls tumble in the backdrop. This photogenic walk will keep all ages happy and entertained.

To start the Steall Falls and the Nevis Gorge Walk, go to the path at the end of Upper Glen Nevis Car Park, where you’ll see a signpost for several different walks. Follow it into the woodland and go along a rocky path into the gorge. Eventually, the path becomes rockier. Mind your step!

Revel in the surrounding scenery as you walk—streams covered by moody trees with glimpses of Steall Falls in the distance. Soon, the valley narrows as the path takes you over a rocky area replete with steps and a handrail towards the gorge’s pinnacle. Then, as you leave the trees, you’ll notice the scenery fading into something completely different.

Find yourself walking through a stunning grassy meadow painted with wildflowers while Steall Falls steals the attention in the backdrop—this is our favourite view along this walk! Follow the path heading towards the falls. Just wait for more beauty when the path bends to the left. The waterfall view from here is phenomenal. Take a moment here to admire the third highest waterfall in Scotland, backed by An Gearanach, before turning around and the way you came.

However, some opt to continue along the path, branching right towards a wire bridge. Some brave folk opt to cross this bridge, but it requires a lot of balance and care. We advise families and those with dogs from going to the bridge.

Trail Highlights

Steall Falls

Scotland’s third highest waterfall is definitely a natural wonder worth visiting! There’s something magical about watching these falls plummet 344ft down a scenic rock face while An Gearanach soars in the background. Apparently, Steall Falls appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Insider Hints

  • You can take a bus from May to September to the bridge at the Lower Falls

  • Some people opt to go to the wire bridge after viewing Steall Falls
