Ruud Mountain and Proctor Mountain Loop Hike Description
The Ruud Mountain and Proctor Mountain Loop Trail is an amazing adventure that reveals the majesty of the surrounding mountain ranges. Meander through pine woodlands interspersed with aspen groves and sagebrush meadows and explore the remains of the historic ski resort. As this route is open and accessible year-round and conveniently located, you will likely be in the company of like-minded explorers! Additionally, as much of the terrain is exposed, it is wise to pack plenty of water, wear SPF and dress in layers as insurance against changing conditions. Finally, note that those who park on Fairway Road are subject to getting ticketed, but there are additional spots across from the Hemingway Memorial off Sun Valley Road.
Setting out from the Hemingway Trailhead off Sun Valley Road, this hike progresses past the Hemingway Memorial to a junction. Here, keep left onto the Proctor Mountain Loop. Shortly after leaving the intersection, the path will split, veer left here, and you will be guided up a set of switchbacks, gaining a ridge. From atop the sagebrush-cloaked ridge, you will be granted impressive vistas of the mountainous landscape, including Bald Mountain across the valley. Continue climbing, and the Proctor Mountain Loop will eventually deliver you to another intersection. Merge onto the Ruud Mountain Trail, which will reroute you south along the western slopes of Proctor Mountain.
Beyond this point, the route will begin to gently descend, curving west towards Ruud Mountain. Follow this lovely path up to the peak, then back down to the Hemingway Trail, which will guide you back to your vehicle.
