he hike to Dog lake via the Mill D North Fork Trail is a beautiful, moderately challenging route just east of Salt Lake City. Contrary to the name, dogs are not permitted along this trail; however, dogs may access their namesake lake by hiking along the Big Water Trail, which approaches Dog Lake from the north. This hike is best done from June to October, but can be a great snowshoeing trail in the winter months. If you head out in the spring, be sure to bring along a set of traction devices such as microspikes to help on slippery sections.
No matter when you go, this trail is a gorgeous, peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city. This short, out-and-back route winds up through the lush Uinta-Wasatch-Cache Forest full of wildflowers and forest critters. Keep an eye out for moose, deer, and other animals on your hike; if you are lucky enough to see them, do not share your food, and please admire them from a safe distance.
From the Mill D North Fork Trailhead, follow the path as it curves southeast before heading north along the Mill D North Fork. After 1.8mi, the trail will divide, take the path on the left to hike another 0.8mi to Dog Lake.
Take a rest at Dog Lake before heading back to the trailhead the way you came. If you are wanting to explore more in the area, try a hike over to Desolation Lake to the east.
