Lumpy Ridge to Gem Lake Hike Description

The Lumpy Ridge to Gem Lake Trail is a unique walk through the Colorado wilderness. Trek along the rocky terrain to a stunning lagoon nestled amongst granite cliffs. We would argue that Gem Lake is one of the most picturesque lakes in the Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). Though the basin is too shallow for swimming, it’s a great spot to dip your tired feet and spend the day along the shore. If you are hoping to venture this trail in the fall or winter, make sure you wear microspikes or snowshoes to help navigate the likely icy terrain. This trail is located within the RMNP; thus, visitors are required to purchase a park pass.

From the trailhead, the Lumpy Ridge to Gem Lake Hike travels northeast along the Gem Lake Trail. Hike up the rocky path, and at the intersection, keep right. Ascend the route as it weaves you between sparse tree coverage and exposed terrain. Eventually you will pass the ‘privy’ which is a composting toilet nestled between granite boulders, which might have one of the best views in the park. Soon after passing the privy, you will arrive at Gem Lake. Revel in the scenery of the charming lake and take a break here. Enjoy the mountainous landscape that surrounds you and when you are ready, retrace your steps down the trail.

You will be rewarded with sights of Estes Park as you descend the route. At the junction, keep right and you will be diverted onto the Lumpy Ridge Trail. Hike through the granite outcroppings along the trail. Follow the Lumpy Ridge Trail around the loop and it will eventually deliver you back to the trailhead.
