Chapin Pass Hike Description
The Chapin Pass Trail is a wonderful introductory hike to Rocky Mountain National Park summit adventures. This mild, but wildly picturesque trail delivers awe-inspiring views, which are often reserved for technical summit hikes. Note the path to the summit is exposed, so wear layers and check the forecast prior to your departure to avoid getting caught in an afternoon storm. Additionally, park passes are required to access the hike.
Embark on your adventure up to the summit of Mount Chapin from the parking lot and trailhead. Take the Chapin Pass Trail north before confronting an intersection. Here, turn right and hike east above the timberline. After you graduate from the treeline, the conditions will likely be cooler and windy, so bundle up. Hike up the rocky terrain and at the next junction, keep right. This is your final push to the summit of Mount Chapin. Ascend the trail, navigating the rocky scree up to the next intersection, where you will turn right and hike up to the summit.
From atop Mount Chapin admire the expansive vistas. Notice Mount Chiquita across the saddle in the north, and Mount Ypsilon sitting behind it. Revel in the up-close panoramas of the Mummy Range and the Continental Divide. Explore the overlook and when you are ready to return, retrace your steps along the path back to the trailhead.
