Western Vista Trail via Dixie Mountain Loop

Western Vista Trail via Dixie Mountain Loop is a moderate hike in the Union Hills area of Phoenix. This route is moderately difficult, and we’d consider it suitable for strong beginners and older children. The hike climbs up through the hills near the base of Dixie Mountain, ending atop the hill immediately to the west of Dixie. You’ll enjoy a great view of the low peaks and the city beside you.

Along with mountain views, this hike shows off a sea of teddy bear cholla, which despite the name are anything but cuddly. Keep your eyes on the saguaros, where owls and other birds of prey often build their nests and roost. If you’re lucky, you might spot an owl nestled in. There’s also a very old, rusted truck in one of the ditches on this trail, which is interesting to see.

There is no shade on this hike and temperatures can soar, even outside of the summer months. We strongly recommend bringing more water than you think you’ll need with you, wearing a hat, and bringing sunscreen. Try to do your hike outside of the heat of the afternoon and avoid the summer months.

This trail travels through the Sonoran Preserve, a protected slice of land among the ever-expanding Phoenix metro area. Because this is a sensitive natural habitat, remember to stay on the designated trails, keep your dogs leashed and on the trails, and don’t disturb any wildlife you may see. Take all of your garbage with you when you leave.

Mountain bikers may also use this trail, so keep an eye out for one another.

The trail begins at the Desert Vista Trailhead. Follow Hawk’s Nest Trail. At the fork, stay left, then stay left again onto Dixie Mountain Loop. You’ll wrap around the west side of a small hill, bearing right through two junctions.

Follow a wash for a few steps, a great view of Dixie Mountain opening up right ahead of you. The trail bends to your left and begins its climb up the hill. This is the steepest part of the hike, but it’s nothing too strenuous.

Atop the hill, admire Dixie Mountain and the other surrounding peaks. For being so close to the city, this trail really does offer an impressive view. Catch your breath and take the time to appreciate it before heading back down.

You’ll return to the trailhead on the same route, retracing your steps back to the starting point.
