Ma-Ha-Tauk and Crosscut Loop Description

The Ma-Ha-Tauk and Crosscut Loop is a relaxed hike in the South Mountain Preserve of Phoenix. It’s rated as moderate, but only for one climb at the beginning of the route. The rest is quite easygoing. This route is less busy than some of the other trails in the preserve, making it a nice pick on days when you don’t want to fight the crowds.

This trail sees lots of horse traffic, so watch for droppings and remember to give riders the right of way. As with all hikes in this area, bring water with you and try to avoid hiking on very hot days. Some users report using GPS navigation to help them at some poorly marked junctions.

From the trailhead, take Ma-Ha-Tauk, immediately jumping into the aforementioned climb. The trail turns to your left to traverse across the slope, where the views are the best. Then, you’ll hang a left onto T-Bone Trail to begin your descent. Follow the trail down to return to the trailhead.
