Quartz Ridge and LV Yates Loop Description

This hike combines Quartz Ridge Trail and the LC Yates Trail in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve to make a gorgeous hike with varied views. Take in the mountains of the preserve, the city sprawling beyond, the mighty saguaros, and the wildlife that live in the preserve. This trail is rated as moderately difficult, so we consider it suitable for most skill levels and ages.

There are some very rocky sections on this hike, so consider wearing sturdy boots. Additionally, as with all hikes in this region, make sure you bring lots of water with you. Turn back when your water is halfway gone. Finally, consider some sun protection like a hat and sunscreen.

The trailhead parking area for this hike is quite small, so you’ll want to arrive early on the weekends or you’ll likely have to find a spot across the street. The trail heads out alongside the wash. Keep right where the first fork is. You’ll climb gradually up the side of the ridge to crest it, then you’ll drop down into a canyon and then into a flat area with washes. Take a left to loop around the base of the ridge, following Quartz Ridge Trail to where it merges with the #304 Nature Trail.

Hike into the park, taking a left onto Trail 200A and following this route as it skirts the base of the ridge en route to the trailhead once more.
