Dixie Peak Trail is a hike in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve that offers great views of nearby Piestewa Peak. This route is rated as moderate, but it retains an adventurous spirit thanks to lots of loose, rocky footing near the top. This makes reaching the summit tougher, but it’s still generally within reach for strong beginners and better. Expect heavy traffic on this hike.

Dixie Peak Trail Description

The Dixie Peak Trail is a short but interesting trek in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. This hike climbs up a short summit with excellent views of Piestewa Peak and the rest of the preserve. The hike is only 2.6 miles in total, but you’ll be climbing up steep, very loose rock as you make your way to the top. The views are definitely worth that little bit of effort, though.

We recommend sturdy boots and perhaps poles for this climb. Bring more water than you usually would for a hike of this length. If you’re hiking in the winter, you might want a sweater for the top as it can be breezy.

From the trailhead, hike directly south, continuing straight through the junctions. Once you reach the base of the peak, the trail turns uphill and launches into narrow switchbacks. Take your time and try not to slip on the loose rock. It’s a short but intense climb to the top. From the top, you’ll be retracing your steps down, taking care again as you now descend the scree.
