Long Logs and Agate House Loop Trail Description

The Long Logs and Agate House Loop Trail is one of the best ways to see petrified wood in the Petrified Forest National Park, with huge chunks and entire trees laying in pieces on this trail. There’s also a house made of agate built between 1100 and 1200, a one-of-a-kind historical find. This hike conveniently begins from the headquarters of the park.

It’s up to all of us to preserve archeological sites like this for future generations. Remember not to touch the house. Taking any amount of petrified wood from the park is also strictly prohibited and is treated as theft. Don’t lift or move any of the fossils. Close inspection and photos are just fine!

Beginning from the museum and visitor center (absolutely worth a stop before your hike), follow the road to the trail map and take Long Logs Trail down to the loop. The loop travels clockwise, with the long logs near the bottom and a shade shelter just past the logs. The Agate House Trail heads southwest to the site of the house before returning to the loop, where you can stay left to get back onto the trail to the starting point.
