River Dove Trail Description
As mentioned, the River Dove Circular Walk is an amazing adventure that passes through a variety of landscapes, including urban villages, open farmland, and some more rugged terrain as well. Be sure to wear proper walking footwear and bring any necessary gear along for this intermediate length journey. Additionally, the trail can be fairly busy in the areas around Thor’s Cave, as it is a popular destination for tourists. Arrive early to give yourself enough time to explore the area.
Setting out from the village of Wetton, follow the trail east along Thor’s Lane to visit the unique karst cavern and get the busiest stretch of the walk out of the way. After viewing the limestone rock formation, continue along the trail to the north as it follows alongside the River Manifold. After reaching a junction near the Wetton Mill, follow the trail as it branches off to the northeast to cut across the countryside around the Wetton, Narrowdale, and Gratton hills.
Upon reaching the River Dove at the northern tip of Wolfscote Dale, follow the river south, as you take in the tranquil atmosphere along the edge of the water. After walking through the undulating landscape of the dale, follow the path west as it heads through the village of Alstonefield to eventually arrive back in Wetton where you began the journey.
