Rivelin Valley Nature Trail Description

Although the Rivelin Valley nature Trail isn’t an overly busy route, the area surrounding the Redmires Reservoirs and the Rivelin Reservoirs can be extremely busy. Make sure to arrive early in order to secure parking. As this is a one-way walk, you will also need to either double the distance or arrange transportation to take you back to the trailhead. Additionally, this trail passes through densely forested areas that are in close proximity to water, making the likelihood of encountering muddy trails high. Wear proper walking footwear when setting out on the trail.

From the edge of the Redmires Upper Reservoir, follow the trail north to cut across the moor until you cross over Reddicar Clough. At the next junction in the trail, head right and follow the trail to the east to make your way toward the Rivelin Reservoirs. After entering into the thick cover of the forest, follow the path to the right to pass through the wonderfully atmospheric setting of the Wyming Brook Nature Reserve and make your way along the edge of the reservoirs.

Cross over Wyming Brook and continue to the east to pass by the dam wall of the lower reservoir on your left and pick up the Rivelin Valley Trail. Keep straight on the path as it heads through Fox hagg and crosses over the waters of Allen Sike. From here, you will pass over Lodge Lane and skirt along the edge of the Hallamshire Golf Club, following closely along Black Brook as it heads north and meets up with the River Rivelin.

Continue east through the valley and take in the peaceful setting along the edge of the river, as you follow it through the Roscoe Plantation to arrive at the end of the trail at the Rivelin Park Cafe. This is a great spot to relax for some post-walk refreshments before heading back along the trail or returning to the trailhead via your pre-arranged means.
